Frutta martorana, also known as "frutta di Martorana" or "pasta reale," is a traditional Sicilian dessert. This delicacy consists of small shapes of fruit or other objects made from a paste of sweet almonds, sugar, and water, often shaped to resemble fruit, vegetables, or various objects. These creations are then hand-painted with food coloring to look as close to the original as possible.
The origin of the name "frutta martorana" is shrouded in legend. It is said that the name comes from the monks of the Martorana convent in Palermo, who created this type of sweet to decorate the altar on the occasion of the visit of an archbishop who was to be received with a table laden with fresh fruit. Since fresh fruit was not available at that time, the monks created this almond paste to simulate fruit and impress the archbishop.
Today, frutta martorana is a widely appreciated Sicilian specialty and a typical souvenir to bring home from a trip to Sicily. It is often prepared for parties and weddings and is known for its artistic beauty and sweet, almondy flavor.
