THE SICILIAN PIGNA
The pine cone has always been a synonym of good wishes that embodies the symbolic meanings of life force, immortality and divinity.
Assumed as a symbol of the mountain, abode of the Gods, already in remote times in the Mediterranean it represented divinity, arriving over time to become an emblem of speculative and philosophical elevation.
Due to the abundance of its seeds, it was a clear reminder of fertility and life-generating strength, in fact we find it as an ornamental element placed on the four corners of iron double beds.
But the pine cone is also a symbol of fertility of the mind that produces ideas of renewal and growth as its ovoid shape is associated with the pineal gland of the human brain.
It was also often associated with the cosmic egg, with zero and therefore with the birth and creation of mankind.
Fruit of the pine tree, an evergreen, the pine cone also assumes the meaning of longevity and eternity, thus enriching balconies and often enthroned on the pillars of the entrance gates of ancient noble villas and gardens.
