- The Gorgons, the most famous of which is Medusa, are mythological creatures from ancient Greece. Medusa is often depicted as a woman with snakes for hair and a gaze so terrifying that it turns anyone who encounters her to stone.

Medusa was one of the three Gorgons, the other two being Stheno and Euryale. The Gorgons were monstrous creatures with golden wings and brass claws, but Medusa's most distinctive feature was her head covered in snakes instead of hair. Her appearance was so terrifying that anyone who looked into her eyes turned to stone.

Medusa was killed by Perseus, a Greek hero, who used a mirror to avoid her direct gaze and cut off her head. After her death, Medusa's head retained its petrifying power, and Perseus used it as a weapon against his enemies.

The stories of Medusa and the Gorgons are often part of Greek myth and have been the subject of many artistic and literary representations over the centuries.

Triton, in Greek mythology, was a marine deity, son of the sea god Poseidon and the nymph Amphitrite.

He is usually depicted as a man from the waist up and a fish from the waist down (similar to a male mermaid).

He carries a spiral shell that he uses as a trumpet. By blowing into it, he could calm or unleash the waves of the sea. In Greek mythology, he served as a messenger of the sea for his father Poseidon. In some legends, Triton lived in Poseidon's underwater palace with his parents; in other versions, he inhabited a lake near Libya. He is sometimes considered the founder of the Tritons, an entire race of male sea deities named after him.

In short, Triton represents the voice and strength of the sea, a figure that combines power and harmony, typical of the Greek marine deities.

They were handcrafted by a master craftsman from Caltagirone who took care of every single detail to make them, as is clearly evident from the photos, a truly unique piece of Caltagirone art.

It will tastefully and elegantly decorate a corner of your home, garden, or shop, perhaps with a plant or some flowers inside.

THE LEGEND OF THE MOOR'S HEADS

According to legend, around the year 1000, at the height of Moorish rule in Sicily, in the Arab quarter of Palermo, "Al Hàlisah" (meaning the pure or chosen one), now called Kalsa, a beautiful young woman lived her days in sweet yet solitary tranquility, dedicating her attentions to the loving care of the plants on her balcony. From the heights of her flower-filled balcony, she was one day noticed by a young man, a Moor. Overcome by a violent passion for her, the young Moor did not hesitate to declare his love for her. Yet the young man, who had no qualms about abandoning himself to the sweetest effusions of love, was hiding a burdensome secret: his wife and children awaited him in the East, the land to which he was now to return.

Wounded in her pride and betrayed by the man she believed to be her true love, the girl plotted her revenge. So that night, while her Moor slept helplessly, she killed him and cut off his head so that her beloved would not only never return to that family, but would remain with her forever.

She decided that the face of that young man, dear to her, would remain by her side forever, and she created a vase-like object with his head, placing inside it a shoot of basil, a plant associated with divine symbolism and long associated with sacredness. She then placed the head on her balcony, dedicating herself every day to tending the basil that grew within it. Every day, the young woman's tears watered the regal plant, which prospered, becoming ever more lush and flourishing. The neighbors, intoxicated by the scent of basil and enviously watching the plant vigorously maturing in that unique Moor's Head-shaped vase, had terracotta vases made that mimicked the one the young girl had lovingly tended.

Today, every Moor's Head produced bears a crown, an ever-present element designed to evoke the regal plant that originally adorned the head of the young Moor, the protagonist of the sad story.
