Polyphemus was a Cyclops, a giant with only one eye in the center of his forehead, son of the Earth (Gea) and Uranus, and brother of the three Cyclopes Bronte the "Thunderer", Sterope, the "Lightning" and Arge, the "Sparkling" .

According to tradition they lived on the slopes of the Etna volcano and worked in a huge forge in the belly of the volcano to build lightning bolts for Zeus and other magical works such as the armor of Achilles.

In a legend Polyphemus, lord of the place and minister of the god Hephaestus (Vulcan), fell in love with the nymph Galatea, who in turn was in love with the shepherd boy Ace, son of the god Pan, protector of mountains and woods.

When Galatea rejected his marriage request, Polyphemus was mortally offended because the Nymph preferred a poor shepherd to him, and full of anger he began to beat his fists on the walls of the cave, and the upheaval shook the whole mountain, then entered in the woods in search of Aci he opened his way by uprooting, with his powerful hands, dozens of trees.

When at last the Cyclops, blinded by jealousy, met the young man, he uprooted a huge rock from the ground and threw it at Acis, crushing him.

Galatea's endless crying aroused the compassion of the Gods who wanted to mitigate her torment by transforming Aci into a beautiful river that descends from Etna and flows into the stretch of beach where the two lovers used to meet.
