It is said that the beautiful islet called "Isola delle femmine" was once a prison occupied only and exclusively by women. Thirteen Turkish girls, having committed serious crimes, were put on a ship without a helmsman by their relatives and left adrift. They wandered for days and days at the mercy of the winds and waves until a storm hurled the vessel onto an islet in the bay of Carini. Here they lived alone for seven long years until their relatives, repenting of their action, found them after much searching. The families thus reunited decided not to return to their homeland and to settle on the mainland. They then founded a town that in memory of the peace made, they called Capaci (from "Cca-paci" or: here peace) and christened the islet on which the women had lived "Isola delle Femmine".
A testimony by Pliny the Younger in a letter addressed to Trajan, considers the island the residence of beautiful girls who offered themselves as a prize to the winner of the battle.
